The Rhew Farm was started in 1973 by Frank Rhew and his father Frank
Rhew Sr., originally as a cattle and hay operation. For diversification Frank and
his wife Ann began adding peach and pecan trees in the early 1980's. There are
approximately 10,000 trees in the orchards at present. Their son, Rudd, and
his wife, Judy, are active in the operation. In the beginning we experimented
with over 100 varieties of peaches from all parts of the world. But, thanks to
the efforts of Dr. Dave Byrne's peach breeding program at Texas A&M
University, we now have suitable varieties for our southern location, that ripen
from mid-April through July. We like to say, "We grow peaches bred and
raised in Texas for Texans".
Our April fruit goes into the wholesale channels; Orchard sales start the first or
second week of May. Selling here at the orchard is Ann's domain!! She knows
peaches! Whether it is a box of firmer fruit to take to the relatives in Chicago or
a box of 'softs' to put up. She enjoys trading recipes and tips on how to get the
best out of peaches. We're excited about a couple of additions to our operation
this year. First, Ann has moved her sales area from the packing shed into her
Orchard House where peach, pecan, and other pies and cobblers can be
prepared from scratch, for take-out. But the more important addition is Judy
(Rudd's wife) taking a break from teaching to be a full-time mom and also a
partner in the new Orchard House. Baby James was born April 30, 2009 in the
midst of peach season and will be cutting his teeth on peaches!
We welcome visitors to our orchards during peach season.
